5 Best Albums of 2019 (Part 1)

This is of course unofficial but here's a list of some of the most recent albums I've been binging this year that may have escaped your notice. I've tried to be broad with genre so hopefully this includes something for everyone.

1. Slowthai - Nothing Great About Britain

Any artist who can create amazing music and get across an important social message is a genius in my eyes, and the Bajan-British rapper Slowthai has done just that with Nothing Great About Britain. Even the name is genius, though I actually like where I'm from (just not so much where we're heading to at the moment).
Known as the “Brexit Bandit,” Slowthai is shedding light on some current issues within the sociopolitical climate of Britain, and if that alone isn't a good enough reason to listen to this album, it helps that it sounds awesome too.

Favourite song - Doorman

2. Holly Herndon - PROTO

"Glitch Pop" is a genre I didn't even know existed until recently and I found PROTO a mesmerising album to listen to in order to discover more about this low-key genre.
Maybe not to everyone's taste but I still recommend checking it out just for the experience.
PROTO is the third studio album by American electronic musician Holly Herndon and it gives me very futuristic feels, most likely down to the intense use of AI to create a glitch effect over the choral sound to the tracks.

Favourite song - Godmother

3. PUP - Morbid Stuff

As the title suggests, there's an underlying tone of morbidity and anger within the lyrics of this album (and with the angry guitar slamming at the start of many of the songs) however, listening to it makes me feel the opposite way. It's the type of music I'd put on for a long drive and forget about the distance I have to go. Angry yes, but equally liberating.

Favourite song - See You at Your Funeral

4. Fever - Megan Thee Stallion

I originally heard of Megan Thee Stallion through "Bestie" by Bhad Bhabie and thought I'd see what else she had out there (before realising she has been around for some time just under different names). The reason Fever made it onto my list is one word: power.
From the album artwork to the lyrics and general vibe of this music, all I think of is how powerful this woman comes across through music. I love even more that she's from Texas because it's just not what I expected. Listen to this one when you're having a you day (or maybe at the gym).

Favourite song - Realer

5. Injury Reserve - Injury Reserve

Throwing the phrase "experimental" into a genre is always a risk and for this "experimental Hip Hop" Trio it's a risk that most definitely paid off. This album is completely unique to me sound-wise. Though keeping to smooth beats of Hip Hop, Injury Reserve have managed to create a new sound I would almost describe as weird, but in a good way. I've been listening to this one all week while doing my work and it is motivating to say the least.

Favourite song - Gravy n' Biscuits
